Sun, Moon and Rising, in plain words.
Three words come up whenever people talk about their chart: Sun, Moon and Rising. They sound like jargon, but each answers a simple question about you, and each is worked out differently.
Your Sun sign: how you shine
This is the one most people know, the sign of your birthday. The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so your date of birth is enough to find it. Think of it as your core, the way you tend to show up when you are most yourself.
Your Moon sign: how you feel
The Moon moves much faster, changing sign roughly every two to two and a half days. So your Moon sign depends on your date, and sometimes on your time of birth, because the Moon can change sign on the day itself. It is usually read as your emotional nature: what feels like home, and what you need to feel settled.
Your Rising sign: how you enter a room
Your Rising sign, also called the ascendant or lagna, is the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact time and place you were born. It changes about every two hours, so it needs your birth time and your birthplace. It is usually read as your first impression, the way you meet the world.
Why your Vedic Sun sign may differ
Western astrology and Vedic astrology measure the zodiac from different starting points. The Vedic, or sidereal, zodiac sits roughly twenty-four degrees apart from the Western one. If you were born in the first three weeks or so of a Western sign, your Vedic Sun sign is usually the one before. This is why someone who has always been told they are one sign can open a Vedic chart and find another. Neither is a mistake. They are different maps.
Why birth time matters
A few minutes can move your Rising sign when it sits near the edge of a sign, and a few hours can change your Moon sign. If you are not sure of your time, check a birth certificate or ask someone who was there, and be honest about the margin.
A reminder
These three describe patterns. They do not predict your future or decide anything for you. In Rasa Varsh · Made for you they sit together on one page: the Sun is how you shine, the Moon is how you feel, and the Rising is how you enter a room. Read them as questions to test against your own life, and cross out what does not fit.
